What We Do with Bull Calves on Our Farm

So a dairy farm’s purpose is to produce milk, right? And milk comes from female cows, right? So you might be wondering what we do with bulls that are born on our farm.

Since we Artificially Inseminate (AI), we don’t need any bulls for breeding. So we don’t have any full-grown bulls nor do we keep any bull calves on our farm. Any bulls that are born on our farm we take care of just like any other calf until we sell them to a ranch to be raised for beef. No, not for veal. They will be full grown when they go to be slaughtered and used as beef.

Derrick Josi

Derrick Josi is a 4th generation dairy farmer from Tillamook, Oregon, where he milks Jersey dairy cows and farms corn and grass silage.

Wilsonview Dairy, a family farm established in 1918 by Derrick’s great grandfather, Alfred, after arriving from Switzerland as an indentured servant in 1912, is located near the Pacific Ocean where dairy cows enjoy a relatively mild climate on their centennial farm.

The Josi family is proud to play a part in making delicious cheese by providing quality milk to the Tillamook County Creamery Association.
